One of the most rewarding aspects of school life is the opportunity for students to extend their learning beyond the classroom. This year, students from Year 4 through to Year 12 embarked on an incredible range of residential trips and international experiences, exploring new places, developing new skills, strengthening friendships, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Building Independence Early
At St. Catherine’s, we begin fostering and celebrating a growing sense of independence starting in the Lower School with residential trips starting in Year 4.
Earlier this term, Year 4 enjoyed an action-packed residential at SportsCamp Loutraki, where teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship were on full display as students took on climbing walls, archery, survivor-style challenges and swimming activities. Beyond the excitement, the trip helped students build confidence, independence and lasting friendships.
Our Year 5 pupils travelled to Parnassos, where outdoor adventure met experiential learning. From exploring the Vagonetto mining park and its underground train ride to mountain biking, climbing, hiking, archery and water activities, students challenged themselves in new ways while developing teamwork and perseverance in the Greek mountainside.
As the Year 6 pupils completed their last year in Lower School, they enjoyed two memorable residential experiences. They opened their year in Nafplio and Mycenae, where history came alive as students explored one of Greece's most important archaeological sites, investigated ancient tombs and even recreated sculptures in the sand, combining creativity with historical understanding. This term, adventure took them to Agia Anna, Evia, where they showed care and environmental responsibility through a beach clean-up project, putting their classroom learning about ecosystems and sustainability into meaningful action.
Growing in Upper School from Exploration to Specialisation
Across the Upper School, students continued to expand their horizons through a diverse range of educational and adventure-based experiences.
Year 7 students travelled to Ancient Olympia, where the origins of the Olympic Games came to life through visits to archaeological sites and museums. Alongside their historical learning, students participated in adventure activities that encouraged teamwork, resilience and confidence-building.
Students in Year 8 travelled to the Greek countryside exploring the stunning landscapes of Lake Plastiras, combining outdoor adventure with cultural discovery. Highlights included team-building activities, water biking, archery, visits to Meteora and botanical gardens, and experiences that strengthened friendships while fostering a deeper appreciation of Greece's natural beauty.
Year 9 enjoyed being the first Upper School year group to venture out for their unforgettable week in Lefkada, filled with watersports, swimming, boat excursions and shared adventures. A truly magical highlight came when a pod of dolphins appeared alongside their boat, creating a moment that students will undoubtedly remember for years to come.
Year 10 travelled to Edinburgh for a memorable journey through history, culture and university life. Students explored iconic landmarks including Edinburgh Castle, Mary King's Close, the Royal Yacht Britannia and the University of Edinburgh, while enjoying panoramic views from Calton Hill and Arthur's Seat. The trip offered a perfect balance of educational discovery, cultural experiences and time together.
After a busy term headlined by GCSEs , Year 11 students enjoyed a trip to Rio designed to help them decompress by combining adventure, culture and time to connect with friends. From kayaking, hiking and mountain biking to exploring the historic town of Nafpaktos, enjoying a water park visit and relaxing by the sea, students switched gears into fun mode just in time for the end of the school year.
Learning Without Borders
For our Year 12 students, experiential travel extended beyond Greece, providing unique opportunities for academic enrichment and cultural immersion.
Berlin: History Brought to Life
Year 12 students studying German travelled to Berlin for a fascinating five-day journey through one of Europe's most significant historical cities. Visits to sites including the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, Sachsenhausen, the East Side Gallery and the Memorial to the German Resistance brought their studies to life, offering powerful insights into Germany's past and its lasting impact on the modern world. Alongside the educational experiences, students enjoyed exploring the city, its culture and cuisine, making the trip both thought-provoking and memorable.
Málaga: Language and Cultural Immersion
Spanish-language students travelled to Málaga, where language learning was brought to life through daily lessons, cultural experiences, historical visits and authentic interactions with native speakers. The experience helped students develop confidence, independence and greater fluency while immersing themselves in Spanish culture.
Switzerland and CERN: Science in Action
Physics students travelled to Switzerland for an extraordinary scientific journey. Visits to the Einstein Museum and House, CERN, the Swiss Plasma Centre at EPFL, and the Geneva Museum of Science offered a rare opportunity to engage directly with world-leading scientific research. Students returned inspired by seeing how classroom theory connects to groundbreaking discoveries shaping our future.
South Africa: A Transformative Expedition
The highlight of this year's travel programme was the unforgettable Year 12 expedition to South Africa — a journey that combined history, conservation, cultural understanding, adventure and personal growth.
After exploring South Africa's rich and complex political history, students travelled into the heart of the Greater Kruger region, where they experienced breathtaking African sunsets, early morning game drives and unforgettable encounters with elephants, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
Through meetings with park wardens, anti-poaching specialists and conservation teams, students gained valuable insight into protecting endangered species and preserving fragile ecosystems. They also connected with local communities through a visit to a local crèche, learned traditional animal tracking techniques, and visited a wildlife rehabilitation centre.
A particular highlight was spending a night beneath the Southern Cross, sharing stories around the campfire and creating memories that will last a lifetime. More than just a trip, South Africa was a truly transformative experience that embodied the power of learning beyond the classroom.
The St. Cats Journey: Character, Continuity, and Global Citizenship
What makes these residential experiences so uniquely part of the St. Catherine’s fabric is that they are never just isolated trips; they are a deliberate, progressive journey. From the first night away from home in Year 4 to the profound global perspectives gained in Year 12, our travel programme is an intentional extension of the classroom. Through experiential learning, abstract concepts - whether in history, science, language, or ecology - become tangible realities.
By stepping outside their comfort zones, our students do more than just explore the world - they discover what they are capable of. They build the resilience to face unfamiliar challenges, the empathy to connect with diverse cultures, and the independence required for their future paths. These journeys cultivate the very core of the St. Cats identity: curious minds, compassionate hearts, and responsible global citizens.
As we look back on this remarkable year of travel, we celebrate much more than the miles covered or the sites visited. We celebrate the profound personal growth, the lifelong bonds forged between peers, and the enduring confidence our students bring back with them into the classroom and beyond.
