At St. Catherine's, we believe that some of life's greatest lessons are learned through experience. Our Year 12 South Africa expedition stands as a shining example of this philosophy in action - empowering students to become compassionate, curious and globally minded young people. This year's journey was an extraordinary adventure that combined history, conservation, cultural understanding and personal growth. extraordinary adventure that combined history, conservation, cultural understanding and personal growth.

The journey began with an exploration of South Africa's rich and complex political history, encouraging students to reflect on the country's past and the lessons it offers for the future. From there, the experience shifted dramatically as students travelled into the breathtaking wilderness of the Greater Kruger region, where the classroom became the African bush.

Every day brought a new opportunity for discovery. Travelling through the reserve in open safari vehicles, students witnessed spectacular African sunrises and sunsets, encountered elephants grazing beside rivers, and observed giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and countless other animals thriving in their natural habitat. These unforgettable wildlife encounters inspired awe while fostering a deeper appreciation for the importance of conservation.

"Being that close to the elephants taught me how to sit quietly and be fully present in the moment. Stepping away from the distractions of everyday life gave me a new appreciation for both nature and myself." - Isabella Z

The vast landscapes of South Africa became just as memorable as the wildlife itself. Surrounded by endless horizons and unforgettable sunsets, students experienced a world far removed from their everyday lives.

"Standing in the middle of South Africa's landscape made me realise how small we are compared to the vast beauty of nature. It changed the way I see the world beyond my everyday life." - Georgina A

Learning extended far beyond observation. Through conversations with park wardens, anti-poaching specialists and conservation teams, students gained first-hand insight into the ongoing efforts to protect endangered species and preserve one of the world's most precious ecosystems. Meeting highly trained anti-poaching dogs, learning traditional animal tracking techniques and visiting the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre provided a unique understanding of the dedication and collaboration required to safeguard South Africa's wildlife.

"Learning about conservation and the realities of poaching completely changed my perspective. Seeing animals in their natural habitat made me appreciate just how important it is to protect them." - Jorge G

The expedition also offered meaningful opportunities to connect with local communities. A visit to a local crèche allowed students to spend time with young children, experiencing the warmth, generosity and resilience of the community while gaining valuable cultural perspectives that enriched the journey even further.

"The preschool children taught me that joy, kindness and resilience can transcend any language barrier. Saying goodbye to them was incredibly emotional because they left a lasting impact on my heart." - Katerina P

"The trip itself was incredible, but what made it truly unforgettable were the caring and genuine people we met along the way. It also taught me that I am far more open-minded than I had realised. My experiences challenged stereotypes I didn't even know I held and showed me that true understanding comes from being willing to question our assumptions and embrace new perspectives." - Melina G

Among the many unforgettable moments, one stood above the rest. Spending a night beneath the Southern Cross, gathered around a campfire under an endless African sky, gave students time to reflect, share stories and appreciate the extraordinary experience they were living. It was a moment of connection, with nature, with one another, and with themselves, which many described as truly unforgettable.

"Our South Africa expedition is far more than an educational visit; it is an experience that encourages students to think differently about the world and their place within it. Through encounters with people, wildlife and environments so different from their own, our Year 12 students developed empathy, resilience and a deeper understanding of global responsibility. These are the experiences that stay with young people long after they leave school and help shape the compassionate, open-minded leaders they will become."

- Mrs Lauri-Ann Robertson, Head of IB

More than just an educational trip, South Africa was a transformative journey that challenged perspectives, built resilience, strengthened friendships and inspired curiosity. It perfectly embodied the power of experiential learning, demonstrating how stepping beyond the classroom can deepen understanding, develop character and create memories that last a lifetime.

"Standing beneath South Africa's vast skies taught me how small we are compared to the beauty of the natural world. It made me realise that many of the worries we carry every day become much smaller when we take the time to understand the world around us." - Georgina A
