What does a television studio, a global beverage company, a leading food manufacturer, and one of Greece's most recognisable food service brands have in common?
For our Year 10 students, they have all become classrooms.
As part of the St. Catherine's Career Exploration Programme, Year 10 students spent this year stepping beyond the school gates and into the professional world, visiting organisations across four distinct industry sectors:
These visits form an important part of our Career Exploration Programme, designed by the Futures Team to help students explore possibilities, broaden perspectives, and develop a deeper understanding of the world of work.
Unlike traditional career guidance, the focus at this stage is not on choosing a future profession. Instead, it is about discovering what exists beyond the careers students already know and challenging assumptions about how organisations operate.
Looking Beyond Job Titles
During their visits, students gained first-hand insight into the complexity of modern workplaces.
At Goody's Everest, students discovered that a successful organisation relies on far more than the people visible to customers. Behind every restaurant and product are teams of communications specialists, engineers, architects, IT professionals, human resources experts, financial analysts, and business leaders working together towards a common goal.
Similarly, at Coca-Cola and Loulis Mills, students explored large-scale production environments, witnessing how innovation, logistics, technology, sustainability, marketing, and operations intersect within global and national businesses.
For many students, the experience challenged preconceived ideas about careers and highlighted opportunities they had never previously considered.
Curiosity Through Reflection
At St. Catherine's, the learning does not end when the visit concludes.
Reflection is a vital component of the Career Exploration Programme, helping students process what they have observed and connect experiences to their own interests, values, and aspirations.
Following their visit to Alpha TV Studios, students discussed how emerging technologies and artificial intelligence are transforming creative industries and reshaping professional roles.
At Loulis Mills, students observed highly automated production lines where technology had replaced many manual processes. The discussion that followed encouraged students to think more deeply about the changing nature of work and the new opportunities that technological advancement creates.
Students were asked simple but powerful questions:
The answers were as varied as the students themselves.
Some were fascinated by the scale and precision of modern manufacturing. Others were inspired by the creativity of media production or intrigued by the diverse career pathways available within a single organisation.
Each response revealed something important - not necessarily about a future career choice, but about personal interests, motivations, and strengths.
Building a Community of Possibility
These experiences are part of a broader commitment to helping students make informed and confident decisions about their futures.
Alongside conversations at home, students benefit from a carefully designed ecosystem of career exploration opportunities that continues throughout their school journey.
Events such as Empower You (our employer “speed dating” and careers fair), employer networking opportunities, university fairs, workplace visits, and future work experience placements all contribute to expanding students' understanding of what is possible.
By exposing students to a wide range of industries, professions, and role models, we help ensure that future aspirations are shaped not only by familiarity, but by exploration.
The full picture, then is an ecosystem — built deliberately, year by year, from a classroom game in Year 7 to a week-long professional placement in Year 12.
Part of a Larger Journey
While the format of career exploration evolves from Year 10 through to Year 12, the core purpose remains the same: helping students develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the opportunities available to them.
At every stage, students are encouraged to reflect on important questions:
Alongside this growing self-awareness, students continue to develop essential skills that will serve them well beyond school, including professional communication, curiosity, confidence, adaptability, and the ability to reflect critically on their experiences.
Each experience builds upon the last, ensuring that students are continually expanding their understanding of both themselves and the world around them. By the time they are in the IB programme in Years 12 and 13, they are not simply making decisions about university courses or careers—they are making informed choices grounded in real-world experience and personal insight.
Preparing for a Changing Future
The world of work is evolving rapidly. Many of today's students will pursue careers that do not yet exist and will change direction multiple times throughout their working lives.
The St. Catherine’s Career Exploration Programme is therefore about more than career awareness. It is about developing curiosity, adaptability, self-awareness, and the confidence to navigate an increasingly complex future.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our host organisations, Alpha TV Studios, Goody's Everest, Coca-Cola, and Loulis Mills, for opening their doors to our students and generously sharing their time, expertise, and insights. Partnerships such as these play a vital role in helping young people connect classroom learning with the real professional world and broaden their understanding of future opportunities and learn the important skill of exploring careers.
And that may be one of the most valuable skills they take with them into the future.
