School News

The challenge has been set for St Catherine's to become a Plastic Clever school and the whole school community is ready to drive this forward. Positive, proactive, productive and Plastic CleverOur mission is to nurture environmental leaders, reduce our schools ecological impact, and build an environmentally responsible community. The future of our children and future generations depend on itWe are striving to be as green and eco conscious as possible, after all sustainability sets the focus on our future. Have a look at what has taken place so far this school year...

Healthy Seas /Ghost Diving Day in Lower School!

One whole day together brought us a step closer to becoming a 'Plastic Clever' school! The whole of Lower School spent the day participating in fun educational activities that Healthy Seas and Ghost Diving organised on campus! We can all make a difference to our planet by reducing the amount of single-use plastics we use, becoming 'Plastic Clever' in the process. Five hundred students went on a journey to find out about ocean pollution through interactive games, presentations, the ghost gear phenomenon and how each of us can actively help protect the marine environment and its biodiversity!

"Wow! Who would imagine that you can make socks out of ripped fishing nets!" - Year 4 Student

So many inventive ideas came from the Ghost Divers experience that week, everyone was gripped by the information that had been shared on how we can look after our beaches and oceans as well as meeting the divers themselves and learning about the equipment they use. This sparked many ideas on how we as a school can educate others, how as an individual they can be plastic clever and also be part of the circular economy by putting everything back in, using the 6Rs - rethink, refuse, reduce, replace, recycle and repair. Children from  Reception to Year 6 enjoyed activities created to spark ideas and initiatives on how the children themselves can make a difference to the plastic world that we live in.

Sustainable Halloween Decor!

In line with the St. Cat's Initiatives, Go Green & Plastic Clever School, BlueCycle generously donated ghost nets they collected that were used for decorating and helping our students learn about upcycling and the importance of the reduction of plastic waste. Thank you to BlueCycle and their research and our educational programme's patron, The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation.

Plastic Clever School Launch!

St Catherine's has become the first school in Greece to be part of the growing national community that has decided to take action in the reduction of single-use plastics, as well as becoming plastic smart. In recent assemblies, Joe Green (Head of Lower School) and Eco Lucy (Deputy Head of Lower School), with the support from Plastic Clever Schools and Common Seas, shared how important it is to understand how our actions now can save our planet later . Over the next academic year, there will be many opportunities for the school community to support the drive to become Plastic Clever.  Thank you for everyone's support so far!

Protecting our Planet Day 2022!

POP 22 was a super exciting day for KS3 students, just as we expected! The afternoon was bustling with guest speakers from our community, live streamed events, and an art recycling competition as well as a cool reflective pledge wall for all students. Every day we make an effort is a day closer to leaving a better place for the next generation! Special thank you to our Lower School parent, Ms Eleni Andreadis who came into share her experience with our students and Ms Vangie Burbidge for making her magic in the foyer (below).

Meat Free Modays for Sustainable eating!

We support Meat Free Monday in Upper School by declaring Monday our 100 % meat free day of the week! In removing all meat from our hot healthy meals menu on Mondays, we joined the rising number of businesses, institutions and individuals in our shared mission to improve health and reduce our carbon footprint to the minimum. We are supporting eating a little bit less meat to make a difference!

"Meat Free Monday is an all inclusive campaign. Although it encourages vegetarianism, it does not vilify meat eaters. For me, Meat Free Monday stands against Greed and draws our attention to the negative, potentially catastrophic, effects greed has on our health and the environment. Just because we have made it very easy for us to kill, consume (and waste) very, very large quantities of animals, it does not mean that we should. In fact doing so is harming humanity and the planet. My personal mantra is: Eat as much meat as you believe you could hunt, capture and kill with your bare hands..." - P.G.

This Giving Tuesday join us to support our Go Green Fund! This will support our student Eco Council initiatives for the whole school, and charities selected by the students! This year our key focus is looking after 'what we have' and supporting POP22 (Protect our Planet) our home!

It is our responsibility! Support our student initiatives and

let's make a more sustainable planet together!   Thank you
