Every year, January opens the door to reflection and aspiration. It invites us to evaluate what we wish to change, improve, release, and strive for in the coming year. The changing of the year is a natural time to think about what the next twelve months might look like.
Most often, we want to see progress, both in our personal and professional lives.
Progress feels right for most of us because it holds space for both movement and meaning. It speaks to the steady, sometimes messy, but always forward movement required to finish this book—chapter by chapter, page by page.
Progress doesn’t demand perfection—it is, in fact, its enemy.
Progress only asks us to keep going.
It reminds us that even when things feel stuck, growth is always happening beneath the surface. It’s a word that celebrates the trying, the showing up, the small victories that add up to meaningful change. And for that, it feels exactly right for this year.
The strength of our community here at St. Catherine's is not about having all the answers, but it is also about knowing that some questions don't have simple solutions.
We are all learning as we go, and we are supporting and being supported by others.
Every shred of narrative shared, every vulnerability exposed, every "yeah, me too" moment is a tiny light illuminating the path forward. That’s what makes the hard path worth it.
Equally important in moving forward and progressing is our role in supporting our children as they embark on setting their own goals.
As parents, our involvement in our children's development is paramount. Research consistently shows that active parental engagement leads to better academic performance, improved social skills, and a lifelong love of learning.1
The Importance of Goal Setting
Teaching our children how to set and work toward achieving their goals is a vital life skill. It's about helping them understand their potential, face their fears, and develop resilience and discipline.2
Parental Involvement in Goal Setting
Setting goals shouldn’t just be left to schools or teachers—it’s something parents can play a key role in too. When you’re involved in the process, you show your child that their dreams and progress matter to you. This kind of support can make a huge difference, giving them the encouragement they need to stay motivated and succeed.
Being part of goal setting means having open conversations with your child about what they want to achieve and why. It’s about attending teacher meetings, going through progress reports together, and helping them figure out how to overcome challenges. When parents and teachers collaborate, you get a complete picture of what your child needs, making it easier to set realistic and meaningful goals that inspire confidence and purpose.
Thus, when parents actively participate in their child's education, they provide essential support and encouragement, leading to improved outcomes.3
Practical Steps for Parents
New Year’s Resolutions for Families
The New Year is an excellent opportunity to set family-oriented goals that promote bonding and personal growth. Consider resolutions such as:
Investing in our children’s future begins with the support and guidance we provide today. By actively participating in their goal-setting processes and modelling positive behaviours, we equip them with the tools necessary for success. As we set our resolutions this January, let’s include commitments that foster our children’s growth, resilience, and happiness. Progress is a shared journey, and together, we can create a brighter future for the next generation.
