Like many parts of Greece, our grounds see their fair share of cats; something that feels almost inevitable at a place called St Cats.

There is one particularly friendly grey cat that likes to welcome staff in the Upper School parking lot, and a few that make themselves comfortable in the afternoon sun near the guard station. Students Eva P. and Lara R. have even affectionately named one striking regular visitor “Smog,” inspired by his soft, dark colouring and his playful presence.

Last week, Year 12 students Nadine T. and Georgina A. took the initiative, as part of their CAS project, to take Smog to the vet for a proper health check-up — a thoughtful act that reflects our school’s value of Care, shown not only in the classroom but in everyday choices that make a difference to our community.

"Considering we see Smog so often at school, the thought occurred to us that the stray animals we have come to appreciate at school and in our neighbourhoods do not have anyone that cares for their wellbeing, but that should not mean that they don't get medical care, " explained Georgina A.

Under the guidance of the Municipality of Kifissia, the students visited the veterinary clinic of Dr Teta Asimakopoulou in Pefki, where, following a thorough examination, it was confirmed that Smog is healthy, with no disease or other transmissible issues. He is also receiving treatment for a minor, non-transmittable issue with his eyes and will continue to be monitored by the same students, a further demonstration of the care they have committed to offering.

We are also happy to share that Smog has now been vaccinated, microchipped, and registered with the Municipality of Kifissia. A warm thank you to Dr Asimakopoulou and her team for their attentive care, and to the Municipality of Kifissia for their guidance throughout the process.

"It was inspiring and comforting to know that there are people in our community, like Dr. Asimakopoulou and those in the municipality, who care for stray animals," said Nadine T. “If there's one thing I hope people take away from our project, it's that following our natural human impulse to care not only benefits those who receive that care, but allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the animals that surround us and brings us all closer together as a community."

If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, you can register with the Municipality of Kifissia at https://ethelontes.kifissia.gr/ and support the wellbeing of the stray population in our neighbourhood, along with other community projects — another meaningful way to live out the value of care beyond the school gates.
