Last month, 23 Year 13 students, accompanied by three teachers, set off on one of St Catherine’s most anticipated annual residential trips, embarking on an eight-day journey filled with cultural discoveries, technological wonders and memorable experiences across Japan.
The adventure began in Tokyo, a city where centuries-old traditions meet futuristic innovation. From the peaceful surroundings of Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi Park to the colourful streets of Harajuku, the bustling Tsukiji Fish Market and the historic Sensō-ji Temple, students discovered the many faces of Japan's vibrant capital. There was plenty of excitement too, with gaming adventures in Akihabara, the dazzling energy of Shibuya Crossing and spectacular sunset views from Tokyo Tower.
One of the trip's highlights was teamLab Borderless, where immersive digital art installations brought creativity and technology together in extraordinary ways. At CEATEC, Japan's leading technology exhibition, students stepped into the future, exploring exciting developments in artificial intelligence, robotics and automation. A scenic ride across Rainbow Bridge to Odaiba, followed by a colourful waterfront fountain show, added another unforgettable experience to their Tokyo adventure.
Leaving the city's futuristic skyline behind, the group boarded the famous Shinkansen bullet train for Kyoto, stepping into a world of ancient temples, traditional streets and breathtaking natural beauty. From the magnificent Kiyomizu-dera Temple and iconic Yasaka Pagoda to the enchanting Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, shimmering Golden Pavilion and thousands of vibrant torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine, every destination offered a fascinating glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage.
The journey continued to Osaka, where the lively Dōtonbori district introduced students to the city's famous street food culture and colourful atmosphere, before heading to Nara. Here, encounters with the city's famous deer and a visit to the magnificent Tōdai-ji Temple, home to the towering bronze Great Buddha, provided a truly awe-inspiring finale.
Throughout the journey, students embraced Japan's incredible cuisine, from fresh seafood and traditional ramen to conveyor-belt sushi, while discovering new customs, navigating unfamiliar cities and sharing countless memorable moments with friends.
More than a sightseeing adventure, the Japan Trip offered our Year 13 students an invaluable opportunity to broaden their horizons, experience different cultures and develop independence, curiosity and a global perspective. Their own words capture just how meaningful the experience was:
"Japan is pure magic—found in kind smiles, quiet shrines, and endless wonder."
Mike R., Year 13
"This trip was truly an unforgettable experience, and I will cherish the memories we made forever."
Aristides V., Year 13
The impact of the trip was equally appreciated by families, with one Year 13 parent sharing:
"As parents, it is incredibly rewarding to see our children return not only happy, but also enriched by new experiences, perspectives, and memories that they will carry with them for years to come."
Our students returned to Athens with new knowledge, stronger friendships and memories that will stay with them long after graduation.
A heartfelt thank you to Mrs Polimenakos, Ms Spyrilioti and Mr Zizidis for their dedication and commitment to making this remarkable journey possible!
