In celebration of International Volunteer Day, our KS4 students took part in an engaging assembly exploring what it truly means to volunteer and to contribute to the world around them.
We welcomed representatives from HELP HELLAS and The HOME Project, who introduced students to the many dimensions of volunteerism — from coordination, logistics, and training to advocacy, lifelong learning and social impact. Their message highlighted that volunteering is not simply an act of service, but a structured and meaningful practice that strengthens communities.
They specifically addressed:
What volunteering is — and what it is not
Mrs Antigoni Oraiopoulou, Vice-President, HelpHellas
How individuals and organisations work to address world problems
Mr Stelios Vellis, Chief Development Officer, Home Project
Real student experiences of volunteering and making a difference
Luisa D., Student Volunteer, Home Project
Marios C., Hoops for Hope Volunteer
A particularly memorable moment came when our speaker from The HOME Project encouraged students to think creatively about how they can make a difference, emphasising that young people already have the ideas, skills, and potential to shape impactful initiatives.
Our student volunteers also took the stage to share their own experiences. Their reflections offered a powerful testament to the value of giving back. They spoke about the deep satisfaction they felt when supporting others, and the skills they developed along the way — teamwork, communication, confidence, empathy and a stronger sense of responsibility. Their involvement demonstrated that volunteering is not only beneficial for the community, but transformative for the individual as well.
“After hearing the speakers, I actually went to Miss Kalogera and said I want to get involved. I never realised students our age could really do something that matters, and now I want to help.”
We are grateful to our guest speakers and to our student volunteers for making this assembly both meaningful and inspiring. We look forward to supporting our students as they explore new ways to contribute to their communities and lead with purpose.
