Ivy League Inspiration: Brown and Penn at St. Catherine’s

Families Gather for Ivy League Insight Session

Last Friday, the Upper School Theatre at St. Catherine’s British School became the centre of an inspiring conversation about higher education, as we welcomed representatives from Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania for a special Futures event.

For the first time, these world-renowned Ivy League institutions selected St. Catherine’s as the venue for their visit to Athens—an honour that reflects our school’s strong commitment to global engagement and academic ambition.

More than 100 students, families and counsellors from across Athens attended the session, including guests from other schools, creating a vibrant gathering of young people eager to learn more about opportunities at some of the world’s most selective universities.

Our visitors, James Walsh and Sara Cohen, offered valuable insights into what makes Brown and UPenn distinctive and what they seek in future students.

Brown University highlighted its celebrated Open Curriculum, an educational model that encourages students to become architects of their own learning. By allowing students to shape their academic paths with independence and curiosity, Brown challenges them to explore knowledge with confidence and purpose.

The University of Pennsylvania emphasized the power of interdisciplinary study and real-world application, while also providing practical guidance on how students can present their activities and achievements authentically in the university application process.

Across both presentations, one message resonated clearly: there is no single path to excellence. What matters most is intellectual curiosity, authenticity, and the thoughtful way students reflect their passions and experiences within their applications.

We are enormously grateful to our guests for sharing such valuable perspectives on their academic communities and admissions processes, and for encouraging students to think ambitiously about their futures.

It was truly a memorable Futures Friday at St. Catherine’s—one that demonstrated how global conversations about learning and opportunity can spark ambition and inspiration right here in Athens.
