Every year on March 21st, the world comes together to mark the International Day of Forests — a day dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role forests play in sustaining life on Earth. From providing clean air and water to sheltering wildlife and regulating our climate, forests are true life-givers.
But for the children in Year 4, this celebration is more than just a calendar event — it’s an everyday experience. Through the magic of Forest School, they are learning to love, respect, and connect with the natural world in the most powerful way possible: by immersing themselves in it.
Learning Among the Leaves
Forest School is not just outdoor education — it’s a journey. A place where freedom, fun, and mindfulness intertwine. On a recent Friday session, children were encouraged to spend time with their favourite tree — climbing, hugging, listening to its sounds, and simply being present. Afterwards, they brought their imagination to life by creating clay tree spirits, adorning trunks with their creative interpretations of nature’s hidden guardians.
In their own words, Forest School is:
“Freedom.” “Soothing.” “Joy.” “Love.” “Calm.” “Exciting.” “Amazing.”
These aren’t just feelings — they’re seeds of environmental stewardship being planted early, and with great care.
Why Forests Matter (Even More Than We Think)
Spending time in forests is not just enjoyable — it’s transformational. Research continues to show the incredible benefits of being surrounded by trees and nature:
🌿 Reduces stress and anxiety
🌞 Boosts mood and energy
🌈 Enhances focus and creativity
🧘 Encourages mindfulness and calm
🛌 Improves sleep quality
🛡️ Strengthens the immune system
💓 Lowers blood pressure
🌻 Deepens our connection with nature
☀️ Promotes Vitamin D absorption
🤝 Supports social bonding
🔋 Provides a digital detox
🌍 Instils a spiritual and grounding connection
A Greener Future Begins Here
By giving our children the opportunity to connect, explore, and play in nature, we are doing more than fostering appreciation — we are shaping a generation of environmental guardians. On this International Day of Forests, let us be inspired by the joy, creativity, and care Year 4 brings to the forest. Their laughter among the trees is more than a moment — it is a promise to protect what gives us life.
After all, every great forest starts with a single seed.
