This week, Year 6 pupils had the exciting opportunity to visit Clever Canin in Avlona as part of their Science topic on Evolution and Variation. The visit allowed pupils to deepen their understanding of how different dog breeds have evolved and diversified over time and how these breeds are classified based on various traits.
During the trip, the pupils learnt about the origins of different dog breeds, exploring the history behind their development and why certain breeds were specifically created or selected for particular traits. Whether it was for herding, guarding, or companionship, each breed has its own unique story that reflects the relationship between humans and dogs throughout history.
The visit also included a fascinating session where pupils observed different breeds up close and learned to identify key features that help classify them. They discovered how each breed is a product of its heritage and environment, and how the process of selective breeding has played a significant role in shaping modern dogs.
A particularly insightful part of the visit focused on responsible dog ownership. The pupils were introduced to the essential qualities of an effective dog owner, such as the importance of understanding a dog’s needs, temperament, and the proper care each breed requires. They learnt about the responsibilities of keeping a pet, including ensuring a healthy diet, regular exercise, and providing mental stimulation to keep dogs happy and well-behaved.
Overall, the trip to Clever Canin was a fantastic way to bring the concepts of evolution, variation, and classification to life in an engaging and interactive setting. It gave pupils a deeper appreciation for the diversity of dog breeds and the critical role that responsible ownership plays in the well-being of our furry friends. It was a memorable experience that perfectly complemented their science learning, and sparked a greater interest in the natural world around us.
