Diane of Dobson's Upper School Theatre Play

Theatre is an integral part of the holistic education programme we offer at St Catherine's! Well done to all the students involved in the recent 'Diana of Dobsons' production. Congratulations!

March saw the opening of the theatre doors and the presentation of 'Diane of Dobson's' theatrical play. What an amazing performance and it was particularly special as we were able to invite parents of the cast and guests.

Well done to all our students who took part in the play, to the Director and English Teacher Ms Voutsadakis and to the whole team involved! We look forward to sharing future performances in the theatre and welcoming friends and families.

About the Play

British suffragette, human rights activist and playwright Cicely Hamilton wrote the play Diana of Dobson's in 1908. Her romantic comedy composed during her fighting for the right of women to vote, tactfully critiqued social injustices such as gender inequality, unfair labour and the nature of marriage.

Left orphaned and penniless, Diana Massingberd, finds employment as an underpaid worker in Dobson’s department store, in London’s Clapham. After a hard day’s work, Diana returns to the workers' dingy dormitory and whilst denouncing female inequalities and harsh working conditions to her colleagues, Diana discovers that she has unexpectedly inherited £300. She decides to spend it all on the holiday of a lifetime... In Greece.

Pretending to be a wealthy widow, Diana finds herself pursued by holidaymakers Sir Jabez and Victor Bretherton and of course his rather assertive aunt Ms Cantelupe and her just as eager friend Ms Whyte-Fraser.

Following her rejection of Sir Jabez’s not-so-romantic proposal, Diana reveals the truth about her financial circumstances to Victor Bretherton giving him a chance to reconsider his own awkward proposal.

Will Victor Bretherton want to marry Diana knowing that she is penniless? Was it true love?
