Let's learn about our aspiring scientists!

Can you tell us a little about your project from last year’s Science Fair?

My experiment was about how the type of light (infrared, LED and sunlight) affects the growth rate of a plant.

What inspired you to choose that topic or idea?

I chose this experiment because I prefer biology over all other sciences and, in school, we had done many experiments on how different factors affect plant’s growth rate.

What was the most exciting part of working on your project?

I started preparing enthusiastically and really enjoyed brainstorming on all the resources I would need and how I would conduct a fair experiment. In my opinion, the board creation stage and the actual presenting were the best parts of the science fair.

Did you face any challenges, and how did you overcome them?

I loved surpassing all the difficulties presented because of the project I had chosen, like explaining that the infrared light also included some red light as infrared light is invisible and only produces heat.

What did you learn—about science or yourself—through this experience?

I had fun doing research on the wave lengths plants need to grow, because the plants would not have grown with just infrared light as it has too long a wavelength to grow a plant on its own, even though it is a positive influence on plants.

What did you enjoy most about the overall Science Fair experience?

I enjoyed the overall Science Fair experience because it was a chance to dive into an experiment, collect data, and share our findings.

What would you differently if you were going to participate in the Science Fair again this year?

I was not in a team last year, but I will be this year, because I believe that two brains are better than one, so my project will be better now that I will be in a team with one of my friends. We will try, as a team, to break the record I set last year (91.5).

If you are a student in KS3 (Years 7-9) and inspired by science, don't miss the opportuntiy to participate in this year's Science Fair. Register HERE by Friday 12th September 2025. Questions? Email us at ScienceFair@stcatherines.gr.
