Can you tell us a little about your project from last year’s Science Fair?

The main research question for my project was Capillary Action. Can the size of the paper flower change the time it takes to bloom? It explores what happens during the capillary action. What is Capillary Action? It is an action that goes against the force of gravity through the tiny gaps known as filaments. And my experiment uses this to open the petals of a flower.

What inspired you to choose that topic or idea?

Basically in river channels in some provinces in China, there are these water Lillis that bloom every summer and I want to know exactly why this is happening so I researched and made up this experiment.

What was the most exciting part of working on your project?

My most exciting part was really seeing if the experiment was working and I was nervous about it too because I might also fail.

Did you face any challenges, and how did you overcome them?

Not really, but making the paper flowers the equal size was the most difficult out of all these processes. They must be the exact same size in order for the experiment to actually work.

How did your mentor or teachers support you during the process?

A little bit at the start, once you have thought upon your research question, they will probably help you less and less because you have to do it yourselves. Well, during a science fair project, the most important thing is that you choose your research question right and it would be attractive to hook your judges in.

What did you learn—about science or yourself—through this experience?

Science comes with patience, you do not rush throughout the process and you have to think well before you do something, because it will come with a consequence, either losing your materials or malfunctioning them.

How did it feel to present your project to others at the fair?

Well, it was exciting presenting at that time, I thought that I would be nervous in front of the judges but it is really not. Think of you talking to some friend and sharing your science knowledge with them.
