How to Be a Savvy Consumer When Choosing Universities

Five Tips for Building Your Longlist
From our recent assembly "Spotlight on Creating your Long-list: Research Universities with Purpose."
From our recent assembly "Spotlight on Creating your Long-list: Research Universities with Purpose."

How can students be savvy consumers when it comes to choosing where to apply for university?

That was the key question in our recent assembly, Spotlight on Creating your Long-list: Research Universities with Purpose. Designed collaboratively by our University and Careers team and delivered by Erietta Efthimerou, the newest addition to the Futures Team, the session aimed to give students the tools to take ownership of their university search and build a smart, well-researched longlist.

Here are FIVE ESSENTIAL TIPS we shared with students:

1. Build a Balanced List

A strong longlist should include a range of schools:

🎯 Target (Match) Schools

  • Definition: Schools where your academic profile (grades, test scores, etc.) closely aligns with the average admitted student.
  • Chances: About 40–60% chance of admission.
  • Example: If the average admitted SAT score is 1350 and you have 1350–1400, it's a target.

🚀 Reach Schools

  • Definition: Schools where your academic profile is below the average admitted student or where admissions are highly competitive and unpredictable (e.g., Ivy League).
  • Chances: Less than 25–30% chance of admission.

Types of Reach:

  • Academic Reach: Your grades/scores are lower than typical admits.
  • Selective Reach: Even with strong scores (IB 45/45), low acceptance rates (e.g., <10%) make it a reach for everyone.
  • Example: MIT, Stanford, or Oxbridge for most applicants.

🛡️ Safety Schools

  • Definition: Schools where your academic profile is well above the average and you meet/exceed all requirements.
  • Chances: 80–90%+ chance of admission.
  • Example: If your SAT is 1500 and the school’s average is 1200, it’s likely a safety.
  • Note: Always choose safety schools you'd be happy to attend.

This approach increases your chances of getting in—and ensures you have real choices when offers come in.

2. Research Beyond the Rankings

Being intentional matters. Look beyond brand names to understand:

  • What programmes are offered?
  • What’s the teaching style like?
  • What kind of student community will I join?
  • Will I feel motivated and supported?

3. Use Smart Research Tools
There’s more to explore than glossy brochures. We recommend:

  • CampusReel for student-made video tours
  • The Fiske Guide for honest overviews
  • Student blogs & newspapers for authentic voices
  • College websites—especially “About,” “Academics,” and “Admissions”
  • Virtual and in-person info sessions to speak directly with universities

4. Take Notes as You Go
Whether you use a spreadsheet, notebook, or app, track your impressions and keep notes on what stood out. This not only helps narrow down your list—it prepares you for writing powerful personal statements and supplements later on.

5. Choose Fit Over Fame
The best university for you is one where:

  • You can pursue your interests
  • The learning suits your style
  • You feel a sense of belonging
  • You’ll be challenged—and supported

It’s not about choosing the “best” university on paper, but the one that’s best for you.
It is the opportunities—taking advantage of internships, research, and building relationships with professors and alumni—that will ultimately differentiate you in the job market.
