Service of Remembrance at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery

Lest We Forget!

School News

As in previous years there was a Service of Remembrance on Sunday 13th November at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Faliron. The service began at 12.00pm and everyone  attended. The Lower school Head boys and Head girls assisted with the laying of the wreaths and 3 Upper School students had the honour to perform at the commemorative service.

The site of what is now Faliron WAR CEMETERY was chosen originally by the 4th Division as a burial ground for Commonwealth casualties of the Greek Civil War (December 1944-February 1945). Subsequently, the military authorities, in conjunction with the Greek Government and the Army Graves Service, decided that it would be the most suitable site for a Second World War cemetery for the whole mainland of Greece.

On Remembrance Day, Friday, 11th, at 11:00, the children held a minute's silence as a way to reflect and to demonstrate respect for those that had fought in the World Wars. Our newly appointed school officers helped to present a wreath in the soldiers’ honour.During our assemblies this week Mr Smith shared with children, in KS1 and KS2, stories linked to WWII that demonstrated optimism and courage under difficult circumstances.

Reception created poppies in many different ways to mark Armistice Day; "Where at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month we remember service men and women who fought." Nursery were busy this week making big, red poppies in preparation for Remembrance day on Friday 11th November. The children glued red tissue paper, black seeds and bay leaves onto a paper plate to create their special flowers.

Οur school raised an amazing €641.18 this year, a big thank you to the members of our school community!

We remember the past and all the people who have served or been affected by war.

We think about today and all the people who are fighting for our way of life.

We look forward to the future and hope it will be peaceful!
